Wow, this came out really well! I enjoy the complete absence of the projector's "frame."

Phil,

Thought provoking work in a pleasant, bite-sized, package (byte-sized?). Your trend analysis of bespoke objects is particularly engaging. To add to this, I'm seeing a trend in design thinking toward the peripheralization of the slab. It has not quite reached the market yet, but it seems to be emergent in the mind of the designer.

This seems to be a natural transition to the world of the bespoke object: If slabs cannot be physically what we want them to be, let's extend them and peripheralize them, yet leverage the connectivity of slabs, their input/output capabilities, and raw computing power as the heart and brain for peripherals that match our needs.

But, as you, I only see that as a transition point. These peripherals may fuse back into the slab and establish a physical taxonomy that becomes the suitcoat, cufflink, and breast pocket of the bespoke object.

http://paidcontent.org/article/419-15-ways-publishers-are-re-imagining-the-magazine/

Tablet devices like Apple’s iPad could herald a new kind of digital publication. With just a week until that gadget hits shelves, what could the magazines of the future look like?

For this analysis, we present 15 multimedia examples in which periodical publishers place their bets. From high-class graphics and games to hum-drum page-turners, these are proprietors’ big ideas - but they vary somewhat, coalescing around five key trends…

If you want a laptop, the Lenovo looks like a decent option. But it is not going to create a new category of device, which is what Apple is going for. For me, a Slab does not replace the functions of a laptop - it's for other kinds of activities.

[...] With the release of Apple’s iPad (joke with standing) there was the buzz of technological potential all around the interwebs. Apple has the potential to make game changing devices and with a track record of the iPod, iPhone, and iMac it is hard not to argue with their ability to produce and create a mobs of loyal and dedicated fans. The iPad may not be the replacement to the laptop which many in the Nerd-o-sphere hoped it would and a nice review has been posted by Phil Van Allen (http://www.philvanallen.com/news/its-not-a-laptop-what-people-are-missing-about-the-ipad/) [...]

Really good points all around. Oddly enough, the no-keyboard aspect of it might be actually critical. I think this will prove to be the first device that hits the right scale for the multi-touch: neither too big (Surface) or too small (iphone). We'll see...

Obviously, I really wanted a "slabtop". Because I am projecting my desires for a laptop on this new thing.
