My definition

Interaction Design is the integrated shaping of behavior, content,  form and technology to create dynamic, responsive systems

I also try to banish the term “interface” from my vocabulary when talking about interaction design. This is because good interaction design is so much more than a surface between the user and the content.

Different Approaches/Aspects

  • Usability
    • Based on user studies and user behaviors
    • Eye-tracking, A/B Testing, Analytics, speed, efficiency
    • Time and motion studies, Taylorism/Fordism
    • Human Factors/Ergonomics
  • User Experience (UX)
  • Interaction Design (IxD)
  • Productive Interaction
  • Design and Production Process
  • Creative Technologist
  • Design Research

The design of, and in consideration of

  • Context, in all its dimensions
  • Who people are, goals, needs, desires, etc.
    • Use Scenarios/Task analysis
    • User Scenarios
    • Interviewing/observation
    • User testing
    • Probes / Design Interventions
    • Co-Design
    • Contextual Inquiry
  • The project/business brand, identity, goals, needs, desires, etc.
    • This requires just as much thinking and research as understanding people does, I would argue
  • Serving multiple needs at once
    • e.g. ACCD Website which has to serve many different audiences and uses
    • Responsive Design – designing websites that adapt to the platform they are viewed on (computer, tablet, phone, ???)
  • Prototypes
    • Thinking through making
    • Divergent, not convergent thinking
    • Problem setting, not solving
      • test fitting a range of approaches, ideas, strategies, assumptions to invent an interesting question/problem from a context
    • Discovering what you are interested in for this context
    • Sketching in hardware/software/networks
    • A chance to explore different interaction “design patterns
  • The choreography of the behavior of the user and behavior of the system
  • A content strategy
    • Information architecture
    • Wireframes
    • Walk-throughs
    • Navigation
    • Content sources, managers, roles
  • Thinking beyond the “practical” side of the system
    • Feelings & emotions
    • Brand fit
    • Touchpoints and integration outside of the specific design (retail, telephone, etc.)
  • Related and integral fields
    • Graphic design
    • Industrial Design
    • Software Design
  • Technology design and synthesis with other design aspects – Creative Technologist
  • Specific areas
    • Social Media
    • Ubiquitous Computing
    • Internet of Things / Everything – people, process, data, and things
    • Physical Computing / Tangible Computing
    • Mobile Design
    • Installation/Exhibition Design
