Tablet devices like Apple’s iPad could herald a new kind of digital publication. With just a week until that gadget hits shelves, what could the magazines of the future look like?

For this analysis, we present 15 multimedia examples in which periodical publishers place their bets. From high-class graphics and games to hum-drum page-turners, these are proprietors’ big ideas - but they vary somewhat, coalescing around five key trends…

If you want a laptop, the Lenovo looks like a decent option. But it is not going to create a new category of device, which is what Apple is going for. For me, a Slab does not replace the functions of a laptop - it's for other kinds of activities.

[...] With the release of Apple’s iPad (joke with standing) there was the buzz of technological potential all around the interwebs. Apple has the potential to make game changing devices and with a track record of the iPod, iPhone, and iMac it is hard not to argue with their ability to produce and create a mobs of loyal and dedicated fans. The iPad may not be the replacement to the laptop which many in the Nerd-o-sphere hoped it would and a nice review has been posted by Phil Van Allen (http://www.philvanallen.com/news/its-not-a-laptop-what-people-are-missing-about-the-ipad/) [...]

Really good points all around. Oddly enough, the no-keyboard aspect of it might be actually critical. I think this will prove to be the first device that hits the right scale for the multi-touch: neither too big (Surface) or too small (iphone). We'll see...

Good call, Phil. A SLAB. And seriously, can Apple just get it together and recognize Flash is used by a lot of people? Also, no camera and multitasking seems like an oversight even for release 1.0.
